Eating out in Jaipur -

So I recently had the chance to visit Jaipur & Jodhpur with Thomas Cook India, who had arranged the travel for me. Being a committed foodie and an ardent history lover, I was definitely excited to visit Rajasthan to gorge on the lip-smacking food and satisfy the need to check out places of historical importance in India.

Since Thomascook had arranged the hotel and the travel for me, I really did not have to worry about that part of the journey. The trip as planned well but then life has other plans, and I fell sick. Ok, no wait I was sick as a dog. I caught a bad cold that led to a ridiculous throat ache and then an asthma attack (which btw I had not had in years, so I was ill prepared).


Anyway leaving my health woes aside and taking the suggestions of so many of the fellow Instagrammers, I braved on and set out to eat. And let me tell you, after this trip, I can say I am a committed foodie because even death by cold couldn’t stop me from eating.

So here is a quick summary of the places I ate at in these 2 cities. Pardon me if I could not visit every food joint that was recommended to me and also if you don’t think these are the best. Also, I am trying very hard to be a vegetarian so I could not indulge in “Laal Mass” that was so highly recommended.




Rawat Restaurant for breakfast – Station Road, Near Sindhi Camp, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302001


Now everyone and their dog asked me to go here. Rawat’s is famous for their lip-smacking deep fried Pyaaz Kachori (Stuffed flatbread with Onions),  Mirchi Badas (Large green Chilli/Pepper stuffed with potatoes, coated in Chickpea flour and then deep fried & Ghevar (a flower-shaped deep fried sweet dish that is then served with Rabri, thickened Milk).




Have you noticed how everything is deep fried here? Well, let me tell you it was all good. We also bought some Gunjiya and Chirawa Peda to take back home with us.




Lassiwala – 312, MI Road, Paach Batti, Jayanti Market, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302001




I think we Punjabi’s claim to have ownership on Lassi and feel that we know and make the best Lassis. Well, guess what someday we have to eat a humble pie when we discover that other states also make amazing Lassi. And oh my god the Malai Lassi that we had at Lassiwala in Jaipur was to die for. The thick layer of the malai on top of the Lassi which was served in the tall kulhars (Glass made of earthenware) was to die for. I went there twice despite a cold because even if I died of the sneezing and wheezing, it would have been a happy Lassi induced death.

We went here for dinner after being exhausted after a whole day of sightseeing. While they also have Continental & Chinese food, we stuck to Indian food. My mother who really cannot digest heavy ghee laden food asked for a simple meal, and the server ensured that we were served a simple dinner of Dabi Bada, Dal Fry, and Baigan Bharta, which my mother really enjoyed.


Shri Thaal – 3, Rathore Nagar, Main Queens Road, Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302021, India


OBIE0652Now a lot of people wrote to me and asked me to visit “Chowki Daani,” which is Rajasthani theme based restaurant where you are served an authentic Rajasthani meal with Live entertainment which includes a Puppet Show, music, dancing, etc. Both my mother and I had visited Chowki Daani before, as we had one near our house in Mumbai. So we visited Shri Thaal, which is a smaller version of the same type of restaurant and also serves authentic food. And we were not disappointed, the food was spicy, hot, delicious and real. We had Panchmel Dal (mixed lentils), Kadhi (Curd based soupy dish), Saag (Mustard Greens, the ones we had here were really spicy), Aloo Pyaaz ki Sabzi (Potato & Onions cooked in a spicy gravy), Paneer ki sabzi (Cottage Cheese) Makki ki roti (Cornbread) and Gehu ki roti (Wholewheat roti). There was also an assortment of pickles and chutneys to choose from with Rice. For dessert, they got hot and crispy Jalebis from the wok to our table. This was our first meal in Jaipur, and it was a good one.


Park Regis – Park Regis, Garden Scheme, Near Jalmahal, Amer Road, Rajasthan 302002, India




One of the evenings when I got really sick, and we had some family friends visit us, we decided to dine at our hotel itself. So we ordered from the restaurant, and the food was delicious. However, our friend who had the Laal maas and knew the taste well told us that you can get better and more authentic Laal Maas in other places in Jaipur. We ordered Vegetable Pulao, Laal Maas (Meat cooked in Red chilies giving it the name Laal (Red) Maas (Meat), Mushroom Mutter (Mushroom & Peas), Raita & Gulab Jamuns. The Mushroom Mutter and Pulao was spot on, and we really enjoyed the meal. The Gulab Jamuns were gobbled down by the guest as the Laal Maas that he ate even though not the best was still a very spicy affair.


Santosh Bhojanlaya – Railway Station Road, Near Over Bridge, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302006, India




A few people recommended this place in Sindhi Camp. The restaurant is an elementary rundown looking place, but the food was wholesome and delicious. We ordered a ‘Rajasthani Thali” which came with hot Rotis drizzled with Ghee, Dal, Saag (Greens) with Potatoes, Rasedar Aloo Gobi, Mango pickle, Lehsun chutney, Salad, Kadhi and Choorma (Roasted wholewheat with Sugar, again a specialty of Rajasthan). We ordered the Chaas (Buttermilk) separately. Once  I had finished my meal, a waiter came over and crushed 2 Baatis (baked hardened Bread) and added a lot and I mean a lot of Ghee and then topped with Sugar. I was told that this was another way of having  Baati, which can be eaten with hot Dal as well. The entire meal cost us less than 400 rs and was really delicious.


1135 AD – Amer Road, आमेर क़िला, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302001, India




This meal at this restaurant was really disappointing because we had gone here to eat an authentic Rajasthani fare. Located on top of Amer fort, this place had incredibly breathtaking views. Also, the way the restaurant was decorated and laid out gave it an air of grandeur and richness. The menu was definitely promising as it had dishes that were cooked and served in the royal kitchens of the princely states of Rajasthan. We ordered Kurkuri Bhindi Raita (Yogurt served with crispy Okra) Vegetarian Thali “Thale E Jodha,” expecting a treat of Rajasthani fare coming our way.




After an indefinite wait of 60 minutes, we finally saw some food come our way. The meal was served to us on a Silver Platter with small silver bowls and promised to be exquisite as we saw the waiter carry it towards our table.




We were disappointed the minute we saw the meal as even though it was a good looking and also a delicious treat, it was something that I made almost every week/month back home in Sydney, and it really let me down. There was Dal Makhani, Paneer with Capsicum, Paneer Tikka, another starter which we couldn’t figure out for the life of us, Naan, Rice, green mint chutney, Sweetcorn with Spinach, Potato Sabzi & a dry Salad of chopped vegetables on the plate.




The only authentic dish on the plate was “Ker Sangri.” Ker, a shrub berry, and Sangri, a bean of a flowering tree called Khejari are cooked together with Cashewnuts and other spices to make this delicious dish. The story goes that during the great famine of India when almost all vegetation had died off and there was no food available in the arid desert, the locals found that their small Berries & long Beans grew everywhere in abundance. So they decided to mix them together and make this particular specialty which is only found in Rajasthan. I really loved it and felt that represented the sturdiness and complexity of this dry, arid and hot land really well.


Besides that, the Kurkure Bhindi Raita and Gulab Jamun were really good. We left after spending 2000 Rs per plate without really tasting the real flavors of the State. Having said that the food was not terrible and you should go here for the experience and perhaps order individual dishes from the menu instead of a thali, as the list was definitely impressive.

I had heard so much about this restaurant that on my last day in Jaipur I reached here at 7.30 am. There are 2 restaurants in the city called Tapri, I visited the one in C Scheme which is situated on a rooftop and has an incredible view of the city from all sides.




The menu was funky and extensive, and everything in it was something that I wanted to happily eat. But I exercised caution and ordered “Ginger Tea” and “Masala Maggi.” On a cold winters morning, nursing a slight headache and sniffles with a gentle breeze making me shiver, I suddenly came alive. The Tea and the Maggi were both delicious and perked me up considerably and I felt alive and completely cured of my cold by the time I left the place.




While this is not an extensive list of places to eat in Jaipur and they also may not be the places that you like to eat, I ate here and enjoyed my time there. Jaipur is truly a lovely place to spend time with friends and family, if it is the history or the food.
