Yeh hai Mumbai meri jaan -

“Ae dil hai mushkil Jeena yahan, Zara hatke Zara backe yeh hai Bombay meri jaan”.

This is a popular song from a very old Bollywood movie which literally means “Oh heart it is hard to survive here, be careful, be aware this is Bombay my love”. Bombay or Mumbai is a grand dame of Indian cities. The mother-ship that swallows everything that comes in its way. People, dreams, hopes and realities get mixed in its unending, unwinding nooks and corners. The city of dreams which literally never sleeps, Mumbai can disarm you like no other place you have ever been to before. It is sticky, it is humid and the whole world seems to be in the same place at the same time together.

Packed like a can of beans tired bodies cling to each other unwittingly and you are constantly losing your patience with someone you don’t know. The city of paradoxes you see the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor co existing in almost the same space. Somehow we feel that only if we can reach our homes at the end of the day we can forget the “Mumbai” that was getting on our nerves till a few minutes ago. However whatever said and done when you ask a Mumbaikar (someone from Mumbai) where he wants to be his answer will be Mumbai. Because where else would we want to be?
